Analytics for Geography
This course runs through the basics of analytics for geography and geospatial studies. Geography studies require large amounts of data sets and large amounts of raw data need to be processed and analyzed.
This is a 4-lesson course on analytics that will cover the basics of descriptive statistics, inferential statistics and correlation and regression for geographic studies, environment studies and geospatial studies. Specific case examples will be used, for instance human population data available in Singapore from data.gov.sg; the water budget for Bedok, Marina Bay and Serangoon Reservoir catchment area.
Some background of geography and statistics will be useful but not necessary. No prior experience is assumed.
At the end of this course, students should be able to use demonstrate an understanding of quantitative techniques used in geography; utilize Microsoft Excel to conduct empirical analysis and interpretation, and understand literature on analysis and modelling related to geography.
Any Microsoft Excel book will be relevant.
This course is targeted at tertiary students, fresh graduates and working professionals.
